Why it pays

Why drivers should compare auto insurance quotes online

Insurers price the same driver very differently, because every company weighs your age, ZIP code, vehicle and claims history with its own formula. Comparing quotes is the only way to find which formula likes you best.

Compare auto insurance quotes and coverage options online
Compare coverage details, deductibles, discounts, and insurer support before choosing a policy.

Save real money

Auto insurance quotes can vary significantly between insurers for the same driver and coverage. Comparing options can help drivers identify coverage that better fits their needs and budget.

Compare multiple companies at once

One request can help you explore auto insurance quotes and coverage options without repeating the same contact details. Instead of filling in the same details on six different websites, you see every price on a single screen.

Instant quotes, not callbacks

Prices come back on screen in about three minutes. No waiting for an agent to email you a PDF two days later.

No hidden fees

The price you see is the price the carrier charges. We are paid by the insurer when you buy, never by you, and comparing never changes your rate.

100% free to use

Free car insurance quotes, forever. No account, no credit card and no obligation to buy anything at the end.

Your data stays private

We never sell your details to lead brokers. Your information goes only to the carriers whose quotes you actually ask to see.

Coverage explained

Coverage options to review with auto insurance quotes

A quote is only comparable when the coverage behind it matches. Here is what each line on your declarations page actually pays for.

Required in 48 states

Liability coverage

Pays for injuries and property damage you cause to other people. It does nothing for your own car. Most states set a minimum such as 25/50/25.

Most popular

Full coverage

Not a policy type but a bundle: liability plus collision plus comprehensive. Usually required if you lease or finance your vehicle.

Collision coverage

Repairs your car after a crash, regardless of fault, minus your deductible. Consider dropping it once your car is worth less than about ten times the premium.

What to compare beyond the premium

When reviewing auto insurance quotes, coverage details, discounts, claims support, and financial strength also affect overall value.

10 proven tactics

How to lower your car insurance premium

Ranked by the average saving our drivers see. The first two are worth more than the other eight combined.

01

Compare quotes every renewal

Loyalty is not rewarded in auto insurance. Insurers reprice their books constantly, so the cheapest carrier for you in 2024 is rarely the cheapest in 2026.

Potential savings vary
02

Raise your deductible

Moving from a a possible fee to a a possible fee deductible typically cuts collision and comprehensive premiums by 25–40%. Only do it if you can cover the deductible in cash.

Potential savings vary
03

Bundle home or renters with auto

Multi-policy discounts are the single largest discount most carriers offer, and renters insurance costs about a possible fee a month to qualify.

Potential savings vary
04

Try usage-based or telematics programs

Safe, low-mileage drivers who accept tracking often earn 10–30% off. Hard braking and late-night driving can raise your rate, so check the terms first.

Potential savings vary
05

Improve the credit-based insurance score

In all but four states, insurers price on a credit-based insurance score. Moving from fair to good credit is worth more than a clean driving year in many states.

Potential savings vary
06

Pay the full six-month term up front

Paid-in-full and paperless discounts stack, and you avoid the a possible fee monthly instalment fee most carriers charge.

Potential savings vary
07

Claim every discount you qualify for

Good student, defensive driving course, anti-theft device, military, alumni, occupation and vehicle-safety discounts are rarely applied automatically. Ask for the list.

Potential savings vary
08

Drop collision on an older car

Once your car's value falls below roughly ten times the annual collision premium, the coverage can no longer pay out enough to justify itself.

Potential savings vary
09

Report an accurate annual mileage

Many policies still carry a commute figure from a job you left years ago. Dropping from 15,000 to 7,500 miles a year moves you into a cheaper rating band.

Potential savings vary
10

Quote the car before you buy it

Insurance cost varies more by trim and repair cost than by sticker price. Two cars in the same price bracket can differ by a possible fee a year to insure.

Answers

Auto insurance quotes: frequently asked questions

Fifteen questions drivers ask before comparing, answered by our licensed team.

How do I get free auto insurance quotes online?

Enter your ZIP code, vehicle details and current insurance status in a comparison form, then review the prices carriers return. The whole process is free, takes about three minutes and does not obligate you to buy. You will need your vehicle year, make and model, your driver licence number and your current coverage limits to get a bindable price rather than an estimate.

How long does it take to get a car insurance quote?

About three minutes for an online comparison. Our median time from ZIP code to first quote is 2 minutes 41 seconds. Quoting a single carrier directly on its own website usually takes 8–12 minutes because you re-enter every detail from scratch.

Are auto insurance quotes really free?

Yes. Comparison sites are paid a commission by the insurance company when a driver buys a policy, so the service costs you nothing and the quoted price is the same as going to the carrier directly. Be cautious of any site that asks for a payment or a subscription to show you rates.

How many auto insurance quotes should I compare?

At least three, and ideally five to seven. In our 2026 rate study, drivers who compared three quotes saved an average of a possible fee a year, while those who compared six or more saved a possible fee. Returns flatten out beyond about eight carriers.

Does getting car insurance quotes hurt my credit score?

No. Insurers use a soft pull to calculate a credit-based insurance score, which is invisible to lenders and does not affect your credit score. You can compare as many quotes as you like without any impact.

Why are my quotes so different from company to company?

Because every insurer uses its own rating formula. One carrier may weight your age heavily, another your ZIP code, another your credit-based insurance score or the repair cost of your specific trim level. The same driver routinely sees a a possible fee-a-month gap between the cheapest and most expensive quote for identical coverage.

Who has the cheapest car insurance?

There is no single cheapest company for everyone. On national averages USAA is cheapest for military families at a possible fee a month, followed by GEICO at a possible fee and Travelers at a possible fee for full coverage. But a driver with a recent at-fault accident often finds Progressive cheapest, and a teen driver often finds State Farm cheapest. Only your own quotes settle it.

What information do I need to get an auto insurance quote?

You need your ZIP code, the year, make and model of each vehicle, the driver licence number and date of birth for every driver on the policy, your estimated annual mileage, and your current coverage limits if you have a policy. A VIN and your address make the quote more accurate but are not required to start.

How much does car insurance cost per month?

The US average is about a possible fee a month for full coverage and a possible fee a month for state minimum liability in 2026. Your price depends heavily on your state: drivers in Michigan, Florida and Louisiana pay roughly double what drivers in Maine, Vermont and Idaho pay for the same coverage.

Why does the quote request ask for my phone number?

Yes, several carriers will return an on-screen price using only your ZIP code and vehicle details. A phone number is usually required only at the point of binding the policy, because the carrier needs verified contact details on the application.

How often should I compare car insurance quotes?

Every six months, at each renewal. Also compare immediately after any life event that changes your risk profile: moving, getting married, buying a car, adding a teen driver, a violation dropping off your record after three to five years, or a significant credit improvement.

Can I switch car insurance companies in the middle of a policy?

Yes, you can switch on any day. Your current insurer must refund the unused portion of your premium, though a few charge a small cancellation fee. Always bind the new policy first and make the start date match, so you never have a gap — even a one-day lapse raises future rates.

What is full coverage car insurance and do I need it?

Full coverage is liability plus collision plus comprehensive. It is not required by any state, but your lender will require it if you lease or finance the vehicle. If your car is paid off and worth less than about a possible fee dropping collision and comprehensive is often the rational choice.

Do I need my VIN to get a quote?

Not to start. Year, make and model produce a close estimate. The VIN pins down the exact trim, safety features and repair cost, so the final bindable price can shift by a limited amount once you supply it.

Will my final price match the online quote?

Usually, provided every answer you gave was accurate. Quotes change when the carrier verifies your motor vehicle record, claims history or credit-based insurance score and finds something you did not report. An unreported ticket or a lapse in coverage is the most common reason a final price comes in higher.

How quote requests are handled

We do not publish generic premiums as personalized quotes. Final pricing depends on underwriting details and is provided by the applicable insurance provider.

How we make money

We are a licensed insurance producer. When you buy a policy through us, the carrier pays us a commission. That commission never changes the price you pay and never changes the order carriers appear in — rankings on this page come from price and service data only. Advertiser disclosure →
